IS ONLINE LEARNING FOR YOU?

Online courses can be a great opportunity if you find it difficult to fit college into your busy life due to schedule or location. However, online courses are a different format and can require different skills from an on campus course.

Please read the statements below:

  • If you AGREE with all of the statements, then online courses are probably a good fit for you.
  • If you DISAGREE with any of the statements, speak with an advisor before registering for an online course.
  1. I have consistent access to a computer with internet access. Online courses require you to log on daily to check for work, hear from the instructor, and interact with other ÐÇ¿ÕÎÞÏÞ´«Ã½app. If you do not have consistent access to a computer or the internet, you are more likely to fall behind and not complete the course.
  2. I can save and locate files on a computer, send email, and use a word processing program. Online courses require you to find information on websites, send files to your instructor, and communicate in various ways. If you are not comfortable using a computer, then you are more likely to miss assignments or be uncertain what to do next.
  3. I can keep to a schedule and hold myself responsible for staying on task. Online courses keep to as strict a schedule as on campus courses, with assignments and activities due at regular intervals. Without regular meetings with the instructor, it is up to you to make sure you stay on schedule.
  4. I am confident in my reading and writing skills. Online courses use text as the primary form of communication. Thus, they require a much greater amount of reading and writing than on campus courses. For most online courses, any time your instructor “speaks,” you read; any time you “speak,” you write. If you are not a confident reader or writer, online courses can take substantially more time to complete, often to the point of being unable to complete assignments or the whole course.
