Posted on 10/10/2025
NJLEAD providers recently visited Bayside State Prison to meet with incarcerated individuals and share information about the programs and services that will be available to them after release. The visit focused on helping people begin the reentry process early by introducing them to trusted community organizations that can support their next steps.
NJLEAD, which stands for New Jersey Locally Empowered, Accountable, and Determined, is a statewide network of reentry providers working together to reduce barriers and create continuity of care. The initiative such as housing, employment, education, healthcare, and family reunification. Meeting face-to-face inside correctional facilities gives providers a chance to build relationships and start identifying personal goals and needs ahead of time.
At Bayside, the discussions were centered on preparation and opportunity. Providers explained how to obtain identification documents, apply for vocational training, and access behavioral health and recovery support. Many participants used the sessions to map out their priorities and understand the specific steps needed to make a successful transition home.
Efforts like these reflect a broader reentry strategy that prioritizes early engagement, collaboration, and continuity between the Department of Corrections and community partners. By linking individuals to established networks before release, NJLEAD helps create smoother transitions and reduces the risk of setbacks during reentry.
