While settlement in Caldwell dates to the 18th century, it did not become a municipality until 1892.  Its growth throughout the 20th century has resulted in a mature suburban community.   

The Trust grant helped fund an update and expansion of the architectural survey of Caldwell as a tool for use by the historic preservation commission. At least three potential historic districts have been identified as well as several architecturally significant landmarks.
