Step 1: Establishing Eligibility

Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS)

The Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) is issued to an individual who has completed a teacher preparation program and met requirements for certification, including academic study and applicable test requirements. The Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing (CEAS) authorizes an individual to seek and accept employment in New Jersey public schools requiring certification. 

The Instructional Endorsement Specifications on the Teachers webpage outline the requirements for certificates. 

Note: Candidates who complete an approved New Jersey Educator Preparation Program will be nominated for their CEAS by the institution.

Degree Requirement

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required from an accredited college or university.

*There are GPA flexibility rules in place for those who graduated on or after September 1, 2016 where a Praxis test score may offset a GPA that is lower than 3.0, but higher than 2.75.

Praxis II Test Requirement

Professional Teacher Preparation

A coherent sequence of study in professional education courses which culminates in supervised clinical practice.

Physiology and Hygiene Requirement

This requirement may be completed by choosing one of the following options:

  1. Present evidence of basic military training.
  2. Complete a course such as biology, health or nutrition that appears on an accredited two- or four-year college or university transcript.
  3. Complete an online test. You must have a tracking number and an application on file to take this test.
