More Than Just a Month: Integrating Diverse American Histories into K-12 Social Studies

New Jersey recognizes commemorative months that call upon institutions of learning and culture to observe them with appropriate activities and programs. In support of this, a series of professional development sessions throughout school year 2024-2025 entitled More Than Just a Month featured resources aligned to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) for Social Studies.

For educators, More Than Just a Month transforms commemorative months from disconnected, isolated activities into meaningful, standards-aligned curriculum integration, reducing the burden of independent resource development. Through vetted resources that create substantive, year-round learning experiences while authentically honoring diverse histories and contributions, educators can seamlessly weave cultural awareness into their regular instruction, fostering deeper student understanding and engagement throughout the academic year.
