鈥淎t every stage of life, from childhood through the adult years, there is a need for information regarding age-appropriate resources that may be available through state government,鈥� said DHS Commissioner Velez.听 鈥淭he second edition of this guide is produced by contributors from multiple state departments in an effort to assist families in understanding the options and process for accessing essential services.鈥�
The guide was produced by the state鈥檚 Interdepartmental Work Group on Autism Spectrum Disorder, which is hosted by the DHS鈥� Division of Developmental Disabilities鈥� Office on Autism in partnership with the Departments of Children and Families; Education; Health; Labor and Workforce Development; and the New Jersey Housing Mortgage Finance Agency.
鈥淔amilies seek information in order to make informed decisions about potential services and opportunities for their children,鈥� said Office on Autism Director Jonathan Sabin.听 鈥淚n New Jersey, private organizations work with our state departments to provide quality services for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities that foster personal skill development and promote greater independence.鈥�
In August 2010, the Office on Autism was established within the DHS鈥� Division of Developmental Disabilities, creating a centralized location to coordinate information.听 The first edition of this guide was unveiled on April 29, 2011 by First Lady Mary Pat Christie at an event with families held at the PSE&G Children's Specialized Hospital, New Brunswick.听
