Troopers Arrest Man For Attempting To Incite Riot
Fairfield Township, N.J. - On May 31, 2014, Bridgeton troopers arrested a man for disorderly conduct
when he attempted to incite a crowd of approximately 400 people to riot.
At approximately 10:55 p.m., troopers were dispatched to a call in the area of Fordville Road and Reeves Road
for a report of shots fired and a large group of people fighting in the roadway. When troopers arrived on scene,
they encountered a crowd of approximately 400 individuals gathered outside.
As troopers made several requests for people to disperse, Marshall L. Walker Jr., 22, of Millville, N.J., began
to entice the crowd to engage in violent behavior. Walker was subsequently arrested for disorderly conduct. As a
result of the arrest, the crowd became increasingly agitated and attempted to antagonize troopers on scene. Troopers
from Port Norris Station and several local police departments had to respond to the scene to assist with gaining
control of the large crowd.
Although only one individual was arrested, these types of incidents can be volatile. An agitated gathering of
this size poses a serious risk to both law enforcement and members of the crowd. On a larger scale, these incidents
remove law enforcement from their normal patrol activities and their ability to respond to other calls for service.
"Gatherings of this magnitude ultimately disturb surrounding residents and their overall quality of life,"
said Lt. James Meyers, Bridgeton Station Commander. "In the interest of public safety, we will be strict in
enforcing all relevant criminal laws and local municipal ordinances as they relate to large gatherings."
Walker was relayed to Bridgeton Station for processing without incident. He was issued a summons complaint
and released pending a court date.
