New Jersey State Police Working to Ensure a Safe Time for All as State Hosts Special Olympics USA Games

West Trenton, N.J. - Move over Super Bowl XLVIII and make way for the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games. For the second time this year, New Jersey will host a major, nationally-televised sporting event, and once again the New Jersey State Police will be leading the charge for safety and security.

Special Olympics is the world’s largest sporting event for people with intellectual disabilities. From June 14 through June 21, an estimated 3,500 athletes, 1,000 coaches, 10,000 volunteers, and an anticipated 70,000 spectators will visit the state during the week-long event.

The New Jersey State Police will be the lead law enforcement agency for the 2014 games. Similar to the security efforts for Super Bowl XLVIII, the State Police will work with federal, county, and local law enforcement agencies. In addition, the New Jersey State Police will utilize their mobile command vehicle as the emergency operations command post for the event.

The opening ceremonies for the games will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, and events will be held at The College of New Jersey, Rider University, Mercer County Park, Lawrenceville School, Peddie School, the Hun School of Princeton, The Lawrenceville School, and the Sun National Bank Center. This will be the first time that the USA Games, which are held every four years, will take place in New Jersey.

Expect extra traffic congestion in the areas of each event.
