New Jersey State Trooper Saves Life of Choking Child

Trenton, N.J. - On Sunday, October 20, 2013, two New Jersey State Troopers were driving on State Highway 129, when they were flagged down by frantic parents whose 13 year old special needs son was choking on food. One of the troopers is being credited with saving the boys’ life.

At approximately 4:00 p.m., Troopers James Hearne and Ruben Benavidez were on patrol when they were waved down by Filadelfo Estrada, 38, of Florence, New Jersey. Estrada’s special needs son, Julian, 13, was choking on food and not breathing.

The troopers immediately approached Estrada and his son. Trooper Hearne proceeded to perform the Heimlich maneuver on Julian. After several attempts, the food was dislodged and Julian’s airway was cleared.

After several minutes of observation, Julian was placed in his wheelchair and no further medical attention was required.
