State Police to Increase Patrols for Opening
of Turnpike Widening Project

West Trenton, N.J. - The New Jersey State Police will begin an aggressive traffic enforcement program to coincide with the opening of two new sections of the widening project on the New Jersey Turnpike.

In addition to regularly assigned patrols, additional troopers will be assigned to patrol the newly opened section of the roadway for the next several weeks. Troopers will focus on safe driving practices in the area, and traffic enforcement will include moving and stationary radar, laser details, seatbelt enforcement, cell phone use, aggressive driving, and aircraft speed enforcement.

The scheduled opening of the northbound lanes is slated for the weekend of October 24-26, followed by the opening of the southbound lanes on the weekend of November 1-3.

The widening project, which began in 2009, extends 35 miles from the Pearl Harbor Memorial Extension (Interchange 6) to Interchange 9. Multiple ramps to interchanges and service areas have been relocated. These changes will be unfamiliar even to frequent travelers of the Turnpike.

GPS data has been provided to GPS service providers, but navigation devices that have not been updated will not reflect the current changes. The New Jersey State Police recommends that commuters and visitors to the area update their GPS devices and cell phone applications.

It will take time for commuters to adjust to these changes, and the New Jersey State Police would like to remind everyone to drive safely. For more information, please visit the New Jersey Turnpike Authority website at or .
