Federal Records - Censuses

 


New Jersey's earliest federal census schedules (1790-1820) have not survived, with the exception of the 1820 Manufacturer's Schedule. Also, only the Civil War Veterans Schedule and a few census takers' worksheets survive for the 1890 Census.

Federal census records are subject to a 72-year privacy restriction. The 1930 schedule is the most recent federal census open for public research.

New Jersey also conducted its own decennial state census from 1855-1915. Pre-1885 state censuses are incomplete, and no state census is fully indexed. Consult the Secretary of State page linked below for further information on state censuses.
