Off-Duty Trooper Saves Choking Infant
Piscataway, N.J. - An off-duty New Jersey State trooper cleared the airways of a choking two-week-old infant after his neighbor came to his home seeking help.
On Saturday, February 3, at 1:15 p.m., Trooper Robert Meyer was asleep after working a night shift when he was awoken by his neighbor. The victim was seeking help for her two-week-old granddaughter, who was choking, and went to Trooper Meyer’s residence after seeing a marked troop car parked outside.
Without putting on a pair of shoes, Trooper Meyer immediately responded to his neighbor’s home, which was four houses away. Upon his arrival, the baby was blue and struggling to breathe. Using a bulb syringe provided by the grandmother, Trooper Meyer cleared the baby’s nose and mouth, which immediately cleared her airway of mucus that was obstructing her breathing. Shortly after his arrival, Piscataway Police and local emergency medical personnel arrived to assist.Â
Baby Elizabeth was transported to an area hospital where she was treated and released the same day. Elizabeth suffered no serious injuries, and she is expected to make a full recovery.
