State Police Urges Everyone to Celebrate the New Year Responsibly
West Trenton, N.J. - We are officially about to enter the 2020s. There are still no fully automated computer-driven cars, and there is still no excuse for getting behind the wheel after drinking. If you plan on ushering in the decade with a toast, plan on having a designated driver or a place to stay.
During the holiday period last year, there were two fatal crashes in New Jersey, both of which involved impairment from alcohol or drugs as a contributing factor. If you plan on drinking alcohol during the holiday, don’t make a bad decision by getting behind the wheel. Tragedies can be avoided by calling a taxi, using transportation applications such as Uber and Lyft, having a designated driver, or making plans to stay where you are.
In addition to regularly scheduled patrols, the New Jersey State Police will have an additional 46 troopers on patrol statewide. Troopers will focus on violations such as speeding, aggressive driving, improper cell phone use, seatbelt usage, fatigued driving, and DWI.
“While there were only two fatal crashes last holiday period, both involved impairment, which means those tragedies were easily avoidable,” said Colonel Patrick Callahan of the New Jersey State Police. “No matter how many additional patrols we deploy this holiday period, the most impactful factor will be to not get behind the wheel after drinking. On behalf of the New Jersey State Police, I wish you all a very safe and happy New Year.”
This year, the New Year holiday period begins at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31, and ends at 5:59 a.m. on Thursday, January 2.
